Early maps reveal how one of the Americas’ great capitals was imagined, reshaped and rebuilt.
Kislak Talks: Becoming Mexico City: Early Maps takes place Wednesday, March 11 at Freedom Tower Miami. Presented by the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at Miami Dade College, this edition of the Kislak Talks series features Dr. Delia Cosentino, Professor of History of Art and Architecture at DePaul University.
The lecture examines cartography created during the first century of Spanish colonial rule, tracing how Mexico City evolved from the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan into the early modern Spanish metropolis that replaced it in the 1520s. Maps by Indigenous and European artists illustrate shifting urban plans, layered mythologies and the integration of Hispanic elements into existing native spaces. Together, these works offer insight into how the oldest continuous metropolis in the Americas took shape both physically and conceptually.
Free parking is available in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue, between NE Fifth and NE Sixth streets (Building 7 on the Wolfson Campus parking map). Event photography and recording may occur.
