La Fayette and the American South
Jul 01, 2026
Starting: 6:30 PM
A lesser-known chapter of Franco-American history comes into focus during a lecture on the Marquis de Lafayette’s ties to the American South. La Fayette and the American South takes place Wednesday, July 1, at the Biltmore Hotel’s Palme d’Or Room, presented by the Consulate General of France in Miami and Villa Albertine. The program is timed with the United States’ 250th anniversary commemorations and examines France’s role in the American struggle for independence.
The lecture features Vincent Bouat-Ferlier, executive director of the Chambrun Foundation, which preserves Lafayette’s historic estate and archival materials related to his life and legacy. His talk will explore Lafayette’s connections with the American South and offer context for an often overlooked dimension of the Franco-American story.
Following the lecture, attendees can continue the discussion during an informal exchange moderated by Dr. Anthony Atwood, a public historian, military history scholar, founding executive director of the Miami-Dade Military Museum, Florida International University history professor and member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
