Landed
May 24, 2025
From: 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Explore the complex realities of migration, identity and resilience through a powerful visual narrative documenting a pivotal moment in Miami’s history.
Opening Saturday, May 24 at IPC ArtSpace, Landed is a photographic exhibition by Steve Dozier curated by Carl-Philippe Juste. The collection focuses on the simultaneous arrival of Haitian and Cuban migrants to Miami in the 1980s—two groups fleeing distinct forms of violence and oppression but bound by a shared pursuit of freedom. Through intimate imagery, Landed captures the human faces behind these historic waves of migration and examines how race, policy and politics shaped their reception and experiences.
Set against a backdrop of major upheaval—from the Mariel Boatlift and the fall of Duvalier’s regime to the McDuffie Uprising and the early years of the drug crisis—this exhibition reflects on how these newcomers navigated a city in flux. It contrasts the unequal treatment faced by Haitian and Cuban migrants while acknowledging the universal desire for safety, dignity and opportunity.
Presented by iWitness in collaboration with the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab at FIU, Iris PhotoCollective and other community partners, the exhibition is made possible through support from the Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation and the Miami Foundation via the CreARTE grant. Admission is free and open to the public.
