Listening Club: Sound in Space
Aug 01, 2026
From: 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Spatial audio, guided listening and experimental sound works come together in a focused program exploring how sound changes through movement, placement and environment. Listening Club: Sound in Space takes place Saturday, August 1 at the Deering Estate Theater in Palmetto Bay. The free program is part of Subtropics: Audible Fields at Deering Estate, a five-part series curated by composer and intermedia artist Gustavo Matamoros that foregrounds listening as an active, perceptual experience.
Created by Matamoros, the Listening Club is an ongoing series of curated listening sessions in Miami that pairs experimental music and sound art with guided discussion. Its Deering Estate debut features quadraphonic, surround, ambisonic and other multichannel works drawn from the Subtropics Digital Archive and Collection. Featured artists include Olivia Block, David Tudor, Russell Frehling, Frozen Music and Miami-based composer Juraj Kojs, whose 50th birthday is recognized in the program.
The program highlights a range of approaches to spatial sound, from Block’s interest in resonance and site-specific listening to Tudor’s influential work in experimental and live electronic music. Presented in the Deering Estate Theater, recently enhanced with updated projection, lighting and surround sound capabilities, the session invites audiences to consider listening as a spatial mode of attention shaped by sound, architecture and proximity.
