Indie Movies Take Over Miami

Read on for a description of the 2021 festival. Details about 2022 will be available soon.

Some of the biggest stars and filmmakers in the world have graced the screens of the Miami Film Festival, from the Coen Brothers to Pedro Almodovar, Spike Lee and Jeff Goldblum to Sofia Loren. Produced by Miami Dade College, the 38th annual festival will return as a hybrid event with both in-person and virtual screenings, March 5-14, 2021.

In 2019, over 300 original films were premiered to new audiences. The festival moved from its longtime headquarters in South Beach to the movie theaters of Downtown Miami. Festival screenings will be held at the historic Olympia Theater and Silverspot Cinema in Downtown, as well as at the historic MDC Tower Theater in Little Havana and the Coral Gables Art Cinema.

“The Downtown area is bristling with new energy,” festival director Jaie Laplante told the Miami Herald about the move. “It feels like a neighborhood going through a rebirth.”

Galas & Special Events

The festival kicks off with Friday’s Night's Silverspot Cinema 11 in Downtown Miami's showing of Ludi.

Movies & Tickets

With multiple films to choose from at multiple locations throughout Miami, general admission tickets to individual films typically run around $13 each. You can save money by joining the Miami Film Society, which also gives you the opportunity to purchase tickets before they go on sale to the public.

If you’re overwhelmed by the options, but still want to see a handful of films, consider the Buzz List package for $116. Festival programmers select five of their personal must-see, most buzzed-about films and provide you with a pair of tickets to each of them. It’s a great way to get a taste of the festival and guarantee you’re seeing the best of the best.

In addition to film screenings, the festival also presents a wide array of special events, panel discussions, master classes and live performances. And if you’re not here during the Miami Film Festival in March, Miami keeps the spirit of film alive all year with screenings at the city’s top indie theaters.
