Contemporary Moroccan painting is the focus of an exhibition bringing together four artists whose work reflects a range of approaches to form, emotion, space and cultural identity. On view May 14 through July 31 at the Coral Gables Museum, Moroccan Visions features works by Souad Byad, Mohamed Jaamati, Mostafa Naffi and Hanae Elhjaji. Organized in collaboration with the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Moroccan American Council Association of South Florida, the exhibition places Moroccan painting within a broader cultural and historical context.
The featured artists represent different generations and methods within contemporary Moroccan art. Mostafa Naffi works between painting and sculpture, using wood, rigid materials, relief and perforation to create layered compositions that extend beyond the traditional canvas. Souad Byad explores the human figure in staged, undefined spaces, using expressive color and theatrical tension to examine emotion and individuality.
Hanae Elhjaji, an artist from Agadir, works with acrylic and Posca marker on canvas to explore chaos, order and balance through structured visual forms. Mohamed Jaamati, born in Tétouan in 1961, is a visual artist and educator whose career has contributed to the development of Moroccan visual arts through both creative practice and academic work.
