Our Tres Grandes: Fidelio Ponce, Carlos Enríquez & Amelia Peláez

Cuban modernism comes into focus through the work of Fidelio Ponce, Carlos Enríquez and Amelia Peláez in a lecture at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU. The Thursday, September 10 program is led by art historian Alejandro Anreus, whose scholarship focuses on Latin American, Caribbean and Latinx art.

Using the idea of Cuba’s own Tres Grandes as a point of departure, Anreus examines what made the three artists distinctive within the Cuban vanguardia while also placing their work in a broader international context. The lecture pays particular attention to the 1940s, a period when Cuban modernism gained increasing visibility beyond the island.

The program explores the artists’ lives, visual languages and historical settings, considering how each developed a body of work that was both deeply rooted in Cuban experience and engaged with wider currents in modern art.
