An adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel brings a harrowing story of institutional abuse to an outdoor screening at SoundScape Park.
SoundScape Cinema Series: Nickel Boys takes place Wednesday, February 4. Directed by RaMell Ross, the 2024 film follows Elwood and Turner, two Black teenagers sent to Nickel Academy, a reform school marked by cruelty and abuse. As Elwood struggles to reconcile his belief in fairness and opportunity with the violence of the institution, his bond with Turner becomes central to survival and self-preservation. The story draws attention to systemic injustice while grounding its impact in deeply personal experience.
The screening is part of the City of Miami Beach’s SoundScape Cinema Series, with February programming curated in recognition of Black History Month and spotlighting films by Black filmmakers and centered on Black stories. The film begins at 8 p.m. Admission is free with no ticket required. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating on the lawn and enjoy the screening on the New World Center’s large-scale outdoor projection wall.
