Stratum: Artist Talk
May 24, 2026
From: 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Textured encaustic paintings translate South Florida’s geology, water systems and coastal landscape into layered abstract compositions. Stratum: a Layered Perspective of South Florida - Artist Talk takes place Sunday, May 24 at the Deering Estate Visitor Center Theater. The program features Miami-based artist and educator Andrea Clement, Deering Estate’s 2025-2026 Artist-in-Residence.
Clement’s exhibition examines the relationship between South Florida’s water and oolite sediments through pigmented beeswax, resin, photography and carved surface textures. Drawing from Deering Estate’s waterfront setting on Biscayne Bay, as well as regional restoration efforts such as the Cutler Slough Restoration Project and the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, the works explore erosion, infiltration, sedimentation, geologic time and other natural processes that shape the region.
The exhibition is part of Deering Estate’s annual Contemporary Currents series, which presents work by past and current Artists-in-Residence in dialogue with the estate’s historic houses and collections. Stratum is on view May 1 through July 30 in the Richmond Cottage Historic Garden Room.
