Tertulia Nights: Networks of Care in David Driskell's Legacy
Jun 11, 2026
From: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Mentorship, education and cultural stewardship shape a panel discussion on the artistic legacy of David Driskell. Tertulia Nights: Networks of Care in David Driskell’s Legacy takes place Thursday, June 11, at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU. Moderated by Dr. Shawn Christian, associate professor and chair of FIU’s English department, the conversation considers how networks of artists, educators, curators and cultural leaders help sustain African American and African Diaspora art histories.
Panelists include Dr. Jordana Moore Saggese, director of the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland; Christopher M. Norwood, founder of Hampton Art Lovers and steward of the Historic Ward Rooming House Gallery & Gardens in Overtown; and Miami-based artist, muralist and educator Charles Humes Jr. Together, they will discuss Driskell’s influence through the lenses of mentorship, collecting, preservation, public dialogue and community-based cultural practice.
The evening is part of the museum’s Tertulia Nights series, with galleries open from 5 to 9 p.m. Visitors can view current exhibitions, including Sites of Assembly, a newly opened exhibition exploring the spaces where public life unfolds. Support for the program is provided by Art Bridges Access for All, FIU’s Department of English and the Green Family Foundation.
