The Art of Purvis Young & Jazz at the Garden of Humanity

Purvis Young’s depictions of Black life in Overtown anchor an evening that pairs visual art with live jazz, funk and soul in Opa-locka. Presented by Ten North Group on Friday, September 18, the program begins at The ARC with Deictic Articulations: The Art of Purvis Young before continuing outdoors at the Garden of Humanity.

The exhibition focuses on Young’s expressive imagery of everyday life, spirituality and community in Overtown, where the Miami artist developed much of his distinctive visual language. Known for painting on found materials and incorporating recurring figures, horses, angels and urban scenes, Young created a body of work deeply connected to the neighborhood in which he lived and worked.

Following the exhibition program, The Jazz Shephards perform jazz, funk and soul in the Garden of Humanity, extending the evening into a community gathering centered on live music and cultural connection.
