The Last Word: Overtown Stories

The Last Word: Overtown Stories is an interactive oral history project that transforms community memories into living art. Created by Key2MIA, this project transforms ordinary green benches into interactive storytelling spaces where residents and visitors can sit, listen and reflect. Benches throughout Historic Overtown feature a QR code linking to audio recordings of community members sharing their memories and experiences of life in Overtown. These firsthand narratives preserve the neighborhood's legacy while inviting others to see Overtown through the eyes of those who live it. Rooted in cultural preservation and placemaking, The Last Word honors the people who built this community and ensures their voices are never erased. The project will also include a collaborative student art installation inspired by these stories, further connecting Overtown's past, present and future.
