Uhuru Rising: A Cultural Awakening
Jun 19, 2025
From: 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Honor Juneteenth with an interactive evening of cultural expression, historical reflection and community connection at Barry University. Uhuru Rising: A Cultural Awakening takes place Thursday, June 19, presented by South Florida People of Color in collaboration with Barry University. This free event centers on themes of liberation, heritage and creative expression through a range of immersive and reflective programming.
The evening begins with a screening of Before Juneteenth: Florida’s Emancipation, an award-winning documentary, followed by a keynote from historian Dr. Tameka Hobbs exploring the links between Emancipation Day, Juneteenth, Haitian heritage and the ongoing pursuit of justice. Cultural performances—including a steel drum band, dance troupes and spoken word—highlight the vitality of the community, while artist Mecca “Grimo” leads an art-making experience inspired by the event’s theme, open to both youth and adults.
Attendees can also engage in facilitated community dialogues focused on healing, connection and collective action. A soul food dinner, gallery walk, book giveaways and creative activities for all ages round out the celebration.
Parking is available in the Landon South Lot (N Miami Ave between NE 115th St. and NE 111th St.) for $2 per hour or $10 daily.
