From: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Explore the legacy of Black journalism in South Florida through an interactive exhibit that blends historical preservation with digital access.
Unfolding History: The Digital Archive – Reviving the Past through Historic Newspapers is on view April 24 through August 31, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex. Presented by the Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, this exhibit highlights a newly digitized newspaper collection featuring landmark publications such as The Miami Times and The Tropical Dispatch.
Visitors can engage with a touchscreen kiosk to browse digitized content, learn about the influential figures behind South Florida’s Black press and discover the pivotal role of community journalism in shaping local history. Supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the project uses large-format scanning technology to preserve and share these archives with the public.
Admission is free, with support provided by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Keon Hardemon and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. The exhibit is located in the first-floor gallery.
