From: 8:00 PM to 9:20 PM
Patriotic repertoire, Sousa marches and concert band works come to The Moss Center in a free performance by “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. United States Marine Band takes place Friday, October 16, as part of the Miami-Dade 250 commemorative event lineup.
Founded in 1798, the Marine Band is the nation’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization and has performed for every U.S. president since John Adams. Its “President’s Own” nickname dates to Thomas Jefferson, reflecting the ensemble’s long-standing role providing music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps.
Conducted by Marine Band Director Lt. Col. Ryan Nowlin, the program is modeled in part on the concert tour tradition established by John Philip Sousa in 1891. Audiences can expect traditional band repertoire, Sousa marches, contemporary compositions, vocal and instrumental solos and a patriotic salute to the Armed Forces. Tickets for the free performance become available October 1. Miami-Dade 250 commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States while recognizing the county’s role in the American story.
