ABFF Community Day
May 31, 2026
From: Noon to 5:00 PM
Film screenings, local vendors and public activations bring the American Black Film Festival experience to the Historic Lyric Theater for a free community program. ABFF Community Day takes place Sunday, May 31 at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater. Sponsored by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, this annual event is free and open to the public.
The afternoon begins at 12:30 p.m. with the HBO® Short Film Award Showcase, now in its 29th year. The program features five finalist films by emerging filmmakers: Jared Leaf’s Spilled Milk, Modupe Thompson’s Facade, Jeremiah Towolawi’s The Truth About Space, Linda Lô’s We Had Fun and Carlton Daniel Jr.’s FLY.
At 3 p.m., the program continues with Girl Dad, a feature film starring Marsai Martin and Courtney B. Vance. The story follows a queer teenager who travels from Brooklyn to Los Angeles to spend the summer with her estranged father, a gifted composer she barely knows. A Q&A with filmmakers and cast members, including Marsai Martin, follows the screening.
