Afrocubanismo
Through Sep 12, 2026
weekly on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
From: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Twentieth-century Cuban art comes into focus through works that examine Afro-Cuban culture, identity and modernism. Afrocubanismo: Highlights from the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection is on view May 1 through September 12 at the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami. Guest curated by Alejandro de la Fuente, the exhibition draws from the Cernuda Collection to explore the social and cultural forces that shaped Cuban art during a period of major artistic and political change.
The exhibition features key Afrocubanista works, including examples by Wifredo Lam, whose practice is closely associated with Afro-Cuban symbolism, Surrealism and modernist experimentation. The works on view consider how artists engaged with African-derived cultural traditions, race, nationalism and the search for a distinctly Cuban visual language.
The exhibition is presented with support from Miami-Dade County, the City of Coral Gables, Beaux-Arts Miami, the State of Florida Division of Arts and Culture, the National Endowment for the Arts and Lowe Art Museum supporters.
