AIRIE Presents Queen of the Swamp
This event has passed.
Join Artists in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE) on Saturday, July 29 from 12:00 to 4:00 pm at Everglades National Park for Queen of the Swamp, a two-part event featuring June and July AIRIE fellows Sydney Maubert and Atéha Bailly.
For the first part of the event, the opening of Sydney Maubert’s large-scale work “Queen of the Swamp” will be held in the AIRIE Nest Gallery at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center in Everglades National Park. This project acknowledges Miami's Bahamian history and its vital ties to a larger cultural geography of Southern and Indigenous aesthetics. It draws upon Miami's history of Bahamian laborers' construction of Miami's infrastructure on porous rock, and their present descendants' influence on Miami Bass culture.
At 2:00 PM, participants will caravan to the newly opened Flamingo Visitor Center for “The Cookout”, an art activation where attendees will eat, drink, and listen to the powerful musings of July AIRIE fellow Atéha “Jojo Sounds” Bailly. Jojo Sounds is an Indie R&B artist, whose rhythms and musings draw inspiration from his West Indian, West African, and Black American heritage.
