An Afternoon with Alessandra Sampaio and Andrew Fishman
Jun 14, 2025
Starting: 5:00 PM
Gain insight into the environmental and political forces shaping the Amazon through a discussion that reflects on one journalist’s pursuit of answers—and the community that came together to complete his final work.
An Afternoon with Alessandra Sampaio takes place on Saturday, June 14 at the Books & Books location in Coral Gables. The event centers on the newly released book How to Save the Amazon: A journalist’s fatal quest for answers, a posthumous collaboration completed by colleagues of British journalist Dom Phillips following his 2022 murder in Brazil’s Javari Valley. Phillips had been investigating deforestation and its impact on the environment and Indigenous communities, work he began with Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira. After their deaths, a team of writers and activists carried the project forward using Phillips’ notes and outlines.
Alessandra Sampaio, Phillips’ widow and founder of the Dom Phillips Institute, will be joined in conversation by Andrew Fishman, a contributor to the book and president of The Intercept Brasil. The discussion will be moderated by Vinod Sreeharsha, Miami Herald’s business tourism reporter and a former South America-based correspondent who had worked alongside Phillips during their early years in São Paulo.
Admission is free and copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.
