An Evening with Cory Doctorow
Sep 03, 2025
Starting: 7:00 PM
Author and digital rights activist Cory Doctorow breaks down how today’s internet became so dysfunctional and what it will take to fix it.
An Evening with Cory Doctorow takes place Wednesday, November 5 at Books & Books in Coral Gables. Doctorow will discuss his latest nonfiction book, Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It (MCD, $30), a sharp and urgent critique of how dominant tech platforms erode the user experience for profit. The book expands on the viral term he coined to describe this decline, tracing the decisions and incentives that led to the degradation of once-beloved digital spaces.
Named the 2023 Word of the Year by the American Dialect Society and cited as an influence on the 2025 season of Black Mirror, “enshittification” offers a framework for understanding a phenomenon many internet users already feel. In the book, Doctorow moves beyond diagnosis to propose concrete steps for reclaiming the digital commons.
Doctorow is the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, including The Internet Con, Chokepoint Capitalism and the Little Brother series. A longtime advocate for digital freedom, he was inducted into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2020.
Admission is free and books will be available for purchase at the event.
