Artist Talk: The Vessels of Memory We Carry
Oct 04, 2026
From: 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Artist Tori S. Scott discusses a mixed-media exhibition rooted in Gullah Geechee heritage, ancestral memory and material traditions. The artist talk takes place Sunday, October 4 at the Deering Estate Visitor Center Theater, offering context for The Vessels of Memory We Carry, on view in the Garden Room of Richmond Cottage through October 20. The exhibition is part of Deering Estate’s Contemporary Currents series, which places contemporary art in dialogue with the estate’s historic houses and collections.
Scott’s exhibition explores her cultural heritage and connection to the Gullah Geechee, whose communities are rooted in the coastal region and sea islands of the southeastern United States. Anchored visually by indigo, the installation incorporates a traditional Bottle Tree, quilt, sweetgrass basket and film to reflect on resilience, family history, agricultural traditions, spiritual practices and the preservation of cultural memory.
A Miami-based visual artist, educator and curator, Scott works across interdisciplinary forms to examine collective histories and the layered experiences of Black communities. She earned a BFA in Studio Art from Florida International University and an MA in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University, and has exhibited at South Florida venues including the Frost Art Museum, Lowe Art Museum and Deering Estate.
Admission is free with online RSVP through Eventbrite. Tickets must be reserved online and are not available for in-person redemption.
