M Ensemble Company, Florida's oldest established African-American theater troupe, is reviving Pearl Cleage's thought-provoking play, Bourbon at the Border. The production runs from April 11-28, with showings Fridays through Sundays and an opening reception on Thursday, April 11. All performances take place at the Sandrell Rivers Theater.
Directed by André Gainey, Bourbon at the Border follows the experiences of two individuals who participated in a historic voter registration drive in Mississippi during the summer of 1964. This pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement met fierce resistance from white supremacists, resulting in violence and lasting trauma. The play explores the impact of these events on the characters' lives, their search for healing and the long shadow cast by that pivotal "Freedom Summer."
