Closing Event: Deering Contemporary-Unraveled Tales
New dates TBD
From: 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Immerse yourself in a multi-sensory exploration of South Florida's rich cultural and environmental heritage during the final celebration of a compelling exhibition. The Closing Event: Deering Contemporary-Unraveled Tales takes place Sunday, March 16 at the historic Deering Estate.
This culminating event offers visitors the last opportunity to experience the group exhibition featuring site-specific works by international and Miami-based artists including Amanda Linares, Pamela Suasti, Laura Villarreal, Nicole Pedraza, Juliana Torres, Claudio Marcotulli, Carol Jazzar and Dona Altemus.
The afternoon program includes two hands-on workshops led by participating artists. From noon to 1:30 p.m., Laura Villarreal guides participants through weaving techniques using fabric printed with archaeological objects and Deering-inspired artifacts. From 1:45 to 3:15 p.m., Dona Altemus leads a monotype printmaking session where attendees create nature-inspired prints transformed into accordion-style books.
At 3:30 p.m., curator Angela Chaine moderates an artist talk in the Stone House Great Hall, providing insight into the creative processes behind works that explore ancestral stories, migration narratives and environmental legacies.
The event concludes with a special performance by Seminole artist Samuel Tommie at 4:30 p.m., featuring a land acknowledgment and meditative flute performance in dialogue with Amanda Linares's artwork Day Before Yesterday.
Admission is free with RSVP, and workshop registration includes general admission to the estate, where the exhibition spans diverse media across the grounds and Richmond Cottage Garden Room.
