Davóne Tines: Anthem
Feb 21, 2026 - Feb 22, 2026
Saturday: 7:30 PM | Sunday: 2:00 PM
Explore themes of identity, justice and resilience through a powerful concert that blends contemporary classical music with elements of protest, gospel and American history. Featuring baritone Davóne Tines, this program delves into the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement and its echoes in today’s cultural landscape.
Davóne Tines: Anthem, part of the New World Symphony’s 2025–2026 season and the centerpiece of its annual I Dream a World festival, takes place on Saturday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the New World Center. The concert opens with Jessie Montgomery’s Banner, a reimagining of the national anthem that incorporates diverse musical traditions. Tines then performs his own Concerto No. 2: ANTHEM, a personal and genre-defying work that weaves together spirituals, contemporary music and spoken word to examine what it means to belong in America. The program concludes with Margaret Bonds’ The Montgomery Variations, a rarely performed orchestral work inspired by key moments of the Civil Rights era.
The performance is conducted by Kalena Bovell, a rising leader in classical music known for championing Black composers and amplifying underrepresented voices. Bovell’s career spans international debuts and acclaimed collaborations with the Chineke! Orchestra and the Kennedy Center’s Reframing the Narrative project.
Davóne Tines, described by The New Yorker as “changing what it means to be a classical singer,” is celebrated for his deep commitment to storytelling and cultural reflection through music. He is joined by the Fellows of the New World Symphony, a group of young, elite musicians engaged in one of the most competitive orchestral training programs in the country.
Individual tickets for this event go on sale July 25, 2025.
