Hambre

Spanish Golden Age literature becomes the source for a darkly comic stage work about hunger, marginality and survival at the Westchester Cultural Arts Center. Hambre takes place Saturday, October 3 as part of Miami-Dade County Auditorium’s Away From Home Series, presented with the Cultural Center of Spain in Miami and Roxy Theatre Group. Drawing from picaresque works including Lazarillo de Tormes, La Pícara Justina and Rinconete y Cortadillo, along with writings by Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Góngora and others, the production examines a society in which wit and language become tools for navigating scarcity and exclusion.

Playwright and director Eugenia Sancho stages the work with her company Sensodrama, joined in the cast by Betsy Rodríguez, Letty Carmona and Catalina Arenas. The intimate production uses the humor and irreverence of Spain’s Baroque-era literature to connect physical hunger with broader desires for identity, belonging and the ability to be heard.
