HOMO SARGASSUM: Art, Ecology & Caribbean Futures

Scientists, artists and curators examine how massive Sargassum blooms are reshaping Caribbean coastlines, ecosystems and everyday life in a multidisciplinary program at Pérez Art Museum Miami. Presented Thursday, September 17, by PAMM’s Green Family Foundation Caribbean Cultural Institute and the TOUT-MONDE Art FOUNDATION, the evening combines short films, conversation and live performance to consider ecological change through both scientific research and artistic practice.

Featured participants include Martinique-based multidisciplinary artist Henri Tauliaut, FIU food scientist Imran Ahmad and Miami curator Vanessa Selk. Their discussion, Tides of Change: Caribbean Perspectives on the Sargassum Era, explores the origins and proliferation of Sargassum, its environmental and economic effects and emerging efforts to transform the seaweed into a usable resource. Tauliaut closes the program with a live performance, followed by a Q&A, book signing and refreshments.

The event grows from HOMO SARGASSUM, an ongoing art and research project conceived by artist Louisa Marajo and Selk that has traveled from Martinique to Florida State University and the United Nations Headquarters. The project culminated in a 2025 publication examining Sargassum through ecological, cultural and postcolonial perspectives.

The program will also be livestreamed on PAMM’s YouTube channel. Museum admission is free on Thursdays after 5 p.m.
