Apr 12, 2026
From: 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
A collection-based talk explores the history and preservation of early plastics through objects, materials and design at The Wolfsonian–FIU in Miami Beach. Into the Stacks: Precious Plastics takes place Friday, April 24, offering an evening program that examines plastics from their origins as rare, experimental materials to their widespread use today. The discussion draws directly from items in the museum’s collection.
Led by Silvia Manrique Tamayo, assistant director of collections and conservator, and Nathaniel Sandler, director of Bookleggers Library, the program considers how early plastics influenced modern design and industry. The conversation also addresses current challenges in conserving these materials, many of which were not originally intended to last.
Part of The Wolfsonian’s Into the Stacks series, the event provides insight into the evolving role of plastics in both historical and contemporary contexts.
