Invasive Species Removal
May 09, 2026
From: 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM
A hands-on coastal restoration effort at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park invites volunteers to help remove invasive plant species and support the area’s natural ecosystem. Taking place Saturday, May 9, the event is organized by Coastlove, Miami Waterkeeper and the City of Miami, focusing on preserving the park’s shoreline and dune habitats. The activity contributes to ongoing efforts to improve biodiversity and strengthen coastal resilience.
Participants will work alongside environmental groups to clear invasive vegetation and create space for native plant growth, which plays a key role in protecting dunes and supporting local wildlife. The event also highlights the historical significance of the park, a site that once served as Miami’s only beach for African American residents during segregation and continues to function as an important public green space.
Tools, gloves, water and snacks will be provided, with participants encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle. Due to the nature of the work, the event is not recommended for young children.
