About Etienne Charles
Born in Trinidad, Etienne Charles is recognized for combining jazz with Afro-Caribbean musical traditions, using original compositions, improvisation and spoken word to explore history, migration and cultural identity. His work often draws connections across the African diaspora, creating performances that are both musical and narrative-driven.
In addition to his solo work, Charles has performed and collaborated with artists including Roberta Flack, Chucho Valdés, Gregory Porter and the Count Basie Orchestra. He also serves as Associate Professor of Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music.
Jazz Encounters Series
Hosted by vocalist and educator Nicole Yarling, WDNA’s Jazz Encounters series presents live performances in an intimate format designed to foster interaction between artists and audiences. The program has become a longstanding part of Miami’s jazz community, often incorporating post-show jam sessions and opportunities for emerging musicians to participate.
Attendees are invited to arrive early for a pre-show reception, with additional programming including a post-performance jam session for participating musicians and students.
