The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami presents a comprehensive retrospective of renowned Japanese artist Keiichi Tanaami. Marking the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States, Keiichi Tanaami: Memory Collage offers an in depth exploration of his prolific career. Curated by Alex Gartenfeld, Irma and Norman Braman Artistic Director, and Gean Moreno, Director of ICA Miami’s Knight Foundation Art + Research Center, with the assistance of Donna Honarpisheh, Knight Foundation Associate Curator, the exhibition will be on display from November 24, 2024 to March 30, 2025.
Tanaami, a pioneer of Japanese and global Pop art, has consistently defied categorization, merging high and low culture with a subversive and often psychedelic aesthetic. The exhibition features works from 1965 to the present, highlighting Tanaami’s innovative use of collage, painting and animation to explore the complexities of the post-war 20th century and beyond. Visitors will encounter a dynamic blend of influences, from the trauma of World War II to the commercialization of popular culture, offering a profound look at how these forces shape perception and creativity.
