Film, exhibition viewing and community dialogue come together in Overtown for a Juneteenth program honoring Paul Robeson’s legacy. Movies Under a Simple Tree: Juneteenth Celebration takes place Friday, June 19, at the Historic Ward Rooming House, presented by Hampton Art Lovers. The evening is part of programming connected to In the Paint: Sports, Art & Culture and explores Robeson’s influence across athletics, performance, civil rights and global justice.
The featured screening is Paul Robeson: Scandalize My Name, a documentary produced by Lucasfilm as part of the educational series connected to The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. The film traces Robeson’s life as an All-American athlete, internationally recognized performer and outspoken advocate for civil rights and human dignity, while also examining the political persecution he faced during the Cold War.
The program includes a Juneteenth community gathering, exhibition viewing, documentary screening, discussion on Robeson’s legacy, music, refreshments and fellowship. The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Historic Ward Rooming House in Miami’s Historic Overtown community.
