P WOJE 12 DESANM | 50 Years Forward: The Legacy of Haitian Boat People
Join the Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center at Little Haiti's Caribbean Marketplace on Tuesday, December 12 as they honor 50 years of Haitian contributions to South Florida with a closing celebration. This event commemorates the arrival of 65 Haitian nationals on December 12, 1972. Fleeing a regime of oppression, the Haitian refugees braved a treacherous journey to South Florida aboard a modest wooden vessel. Their symbolic journey coined the designation of "Boat People", a term that became a collective reference to the Haitian community.
Honoring the achievements of South Florida's thriving Haitian community, the closing celebration features a panel discussion, documentary, poetry, music, and more.
