Cuban son and its global musical legacy take center stage during a celebration of rhythm and tradition at the Miami Beach Bandshell. Son del Mundo: Cortadito Featuring Special Guests takes place Friday, May 8.
Hosted by Miami-based ensemble Cortadito, the event marks El Día del Son Cubano (Cuban Son Day) and celebrates the genre’s recent recognition by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The evening features performances by Grammy-nominated Cuban singer Aymée Nuviola, legendary vocalist Roberto Torres—known for the classic “Caballo Viejo”—and rising sonero Ronkalunga, alongside Cortadito’s interpretation of traditional Cuban music.
The program also highlights the international influence of son through tributes to related Caribbean and African styles. Performers will honor Congolese rumba pioneers Le Grand Kallé and Franco Luambo, as well as Haitian compas legends Trio Selecte and Coupé Cloué. Before the concert, audiences can participate in a Cuban son dance class led by Bárbaro Ramos of Muñequitos de Matanzas.
