See award-winning, Jamaican-American performance artist Shamar Watt take to the Sandrell Rivers Stage on Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24 to perform Summon, a work incorporating experimental cinema alongside live performance. The performance piece investigates the spirit of resistance embodied by the Maroon people of Jamaica and its timely relevance to the intensifying fight for racial justice across the Western hemisphere. Watt traces his heritage back to the Maroons, formerly enslaved Africans who escaped and rebelled against the British colonialists on the island in the 18th century.
Presented by Live Arts Miami, Third Horizon and Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator, Summon features the screening of a new cinematic work by Jamaican based filmmaker Nile Saulter, a founding member of New Caribbean Cinema, and a live performance featuring jazz percussionist Austin Williamson.
