The Bard in Bars
May 15, 2026 - May 16, 2026
Starting: 7:00 PM
Shakespeare’s language meets hip hop rhythms and live orchestral music in a staged performance at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater. Presented May 15 and 16, The Bard in Bars reimagines classic texts through contemporary performance, bringing together actors, strings and verse-driven musicality.
Presented by Art Prevails Project, the production is designed to connect literary tradition with the energy of hip hop, offering a format that speaks to both theater audiences and music fans. The ensemble performs Shakespearean passages with new pacing and sound, creating a bridge between classroom familiarity and live performance.
VIP ticket holders also have access to a pre-show exhibition featuring works by Purvis Young from The Black Archives’ permanent collection. Presented in collaboration with Art Prevails Project, the exhibit highlights Young’s use of reclaimed materials and recurring themes of freedom, social struggle and spiritual resilience, reflecting his connection to Overtown and the broader Black experience.
