The Egyptian Lover
Jan 02, 2026
Starting: 10:00 PM
A late-night club set traces the roots of electro and hip-hop through one of the genre’s original architects, bringing analog machines, vinyl and live performance into an intimate sound-room setting.
Egyptian Lover performs on Friday, January 2 at Jolene Sound Room Miami. The Los Angeles–based artist, born Greg Broussard, emerged in the early 1980s as a defining figure in West Coast electro, helping shape the futuristic, 808-driven sound that bridged hip-hop, funk and electronic music. His breakthrough single “Egypt, Egypt” became a foundational track for breakdancers and DJs, followed by influential releases such as “Freak-A-Holic” that continue to resonate across club culture.
Known for his command of the Roland TR-808 and vinyl-based DJ style, Egyptian Lover’s performances combine classic electro rhythms with live vocals and hands-on machine work. His later albums 1985 and 1986, released on his long-running Egyptian Empire label, reaffirmed his role as both a pioneer and an active force in contemporary electronic music, with appearances at international venues and festivals ranging from Berghain to Printworks.
The event takes place at Jolene Sound Room, an underground venue located beneath the historic Julia & Henry building in downtown Miami. Designed as an intimate listening space inspired by midcentury studios and vintage leisure culture, the room emphasizes sound quality and close proximity to the performer. This event is 21+, with doors opening at 10 p.m.
