Tipping Back | Tilting Forward: 25 Years Gone Too Soon

Now - Mar 21, 2021
Tuesdays and Thursdays Starting: 7:00 PM

Recurring daily through Mar 21, 2021

Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator (DVCAI) announces its new series Tipping Back | Tilting Forward: 25 years gone too soon. As part of its annual Caribbean Crossroads Series, this online socially relevant, artist forum is dedicated to dialogue and conversations with curators, artists, and cultural producers of African American, Afro-Caribbean, and its diaspora. Tipping Back | Tilting Forward recounts the experiences of artists who have benefitted from the programs and support of DVCAI since 1996.

The series begins by recognizing five awardees from DVCAI’s 20th anniversary year, where individual artists received a $5,000 catalyst award for travel and artistic development. Likewise, as DVCAI prepares for its 25th anniversary year while navigating this time of social distancing and disruption, we bring these artist’s voices, challenges, and experiences to the forefront. Throughout the series, artists will be paired to informally converse and reconnect with the assistance of session facilitator who will que questions related to Past, Present, and Future tenses.

It’s first iteration, “Documenting Growth” is scheduled on Tuesday, November 24, 2020  at 7PM EST via ZOOM. DVCAI welcomes Sarah M.K. Moody (United States), Vanessa Greene (United States), and Roy Anthony Wallace (Jamaica/United States). Artists recount the experiences from their residency trip to Havana, Cuba, discuss photography equipment, techniques and subject preferences, and share images that lend information to intersecting ideas about, race, politics, culture, and beauty. Moderator, DVCAI Board Member and visual artist, Rosa Naday Garmendia will facilitate this conversation around the practices of photography as they contribute to building a visual archive for DVCAI’s 25th anniversary year.

Tipping Back |Tilting Forward: 25 years gone too soon, online Zoom Series runs through March 23, 2021. The program occurs one to two times a month, per schedule on Thursdays and Tuesdays at 7PM Eastern Standard Time.
