Miami holds the unique distinction as the only major U.S. city founded in part by a woman. As legend has it, Julia Tuttle convinced railroad magnate Henry Flagler to extend his rail line to southeast Florida by offering property in return for hotel development after Flagler learned that citrus plants in South Florida resisted damage from a freeze that impacted the northern part of the state.
