Shayla Marshall
- July 16, 2026
Shayla Marshall is a contemporary artist who uses world-building techniques to craft dynamic mixed media works inspired by her upbringing in an African American family in Miami, shaped by the culture and experiences of predominantly Black neighborhoods.
Her work draws from multiple moments in time to reimagine histories and futures, creating spaces that challenge dominant narratives and reflect the resilience of Black communities. She uses storytelling as a major part of the framework to begin every piece, inviting viewers to experience the rich flamboyance of these diverse stories.
Marshall’s work has been exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, Tate Modern, The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center and Barry University. She’s held residences at the Bakehouse Art Complex and Oolite Arts. She has participated in fellowships with RCA BLK and DVCAI as a Catalyst Fellow in Suriname.
Shayla holds a MA in Contemporary Art Practice from the Royal College of Art in London, and a BFA in Dance Theatre from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles.
