150 Years of the Carnival de Barranquilla

The history, imagery and cultural traditions of the Barranquilla Carnival come into focus during a lecture by art historian and curator Dr. Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig. Presented Wednesday, September 30 at the Coral Gables Museum, the Link + Learn program examines the celebration’s evolution over 150 years, including its cultural fusions, symbolism, festivities and iconic figures. The lecture coincides with the final weeks of the exhibition La Vida es Un Carnaval de Barranquilla, curated by Birbragher-Rozencwaig.

The evening begins with an exhibition viewing, followed by welcome remarks, the lecture, an audience Q&A and a closing reception with wine and light bites. Admission includes access to the exhibition, which evokes the carnival through Leon Birbragher Vinkel’s photographs, traditional costumes, theatrical sets, video projections and music curated by Tato Marenco. Copies of Birbragher-Rozencwaig’s book on the carnival’s history and visual culture will be available for purchase and signing.

Birbragher-Rozencwaig specializes in Latin American and Caribbean art and culture. She has curated more than 100 exhibitions in the United States and Latin America and is the author of Essays on 20th Century Latin American Art and research examining the transformation of the Barranquilla Carnival from popular expression into public spectacle.
