An Evening with Mirta Ojito
Nov 06, 2025
Starting: 7:00 PM
Uncover buried histories and hidden legacies in a sweeping tale of identity and family secrets with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mirta Ojito at Books & Books in Coral Gables.
On Thursday, November 6, Ojito will present her debut novel Deeper than the Ocean, a multigenerational story that traces one woman’s journey to uncover the truth behind her ancestry. Anchored in the real-life tragedy of the Valbanera, a Spanish ship that sank in 1919, Ojito’s novel follows journalist Mara Denis as she unravels a family mystery spanning the Canary Islands, Cuba, Key West and New York. Told in a dual timeline, the novel explores the enduring force of maternal love and the transformative power of long-buried truths.
Born in Havana, Ojito is an Emmy-winning reporter and shared Pulitzer recipient whose journalism career has included work at El Nuevo Herald, The Miami Herald and The New York Times. She is also the author of two acclaimed nonfiction books and currently serves as a senior director with NBC News Standards at Telemundo Network.
Admission is free with RSVP. Books will be available for purchase at the event.
