Artist Talks: Bethany Collins

Language, race and the construction of American identity come into focus in a conversation with multidisciplinary artist Bethany Collins at Locust Projects. Taking place Thursday, October 8, the program is part of the inaugural Artist Talks series, which brings former Locust Projects exhibitors back to Miami to reflect on their earlier work at the space and the evolution of their practices since.

Collins, who exhibited at Locust Projects in 2018, creates conceptual works that examine how language can shape identity, encode bias and carry histories of power and violence. Working with sources that range from 19th-century musical scores to U.S. Department of Justice reports, she often erases, obscures, excerpts or rewrites existing texts to reveal tensions within their language and historical context.

The Artist Talks series focuses on artists who have played a role in Locust Projects’ exhibition history while tracing how their work has developed over time. Collins’ talk runs from 7 to 9 p.m.
