Artists in Conversation: The Art of the Fugue
May 02, 2026
From: 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM
Spanish-Dutch pianist Albert Cano Smit brings J.S. Bach’s The Art of the Fugue to life in a program that explores how abstract counterpoint unfolds into vivid, expressive sound. The work, composed in the final decade of Bach’s life, is regarded as both a summa of contrapuntal technique and a meditation on the expressive possibilities of pure musical form. Its unfinished final fugue has inspired generations of performers and scholars, making it one of the most studied works in Western music.
Cano Smit has been praised as “a moving young poet” (Le Devoir, Montreal) and is the 2019 winner of the Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions. His international career includes concerto appearances with the Seattle Symphony, Barcelona Symphony and Montréal Symphony, as well as recital debuts at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.
Artists in Conversation: The Art of the Fugue – Albert Cano Smit takes place Saturday, May 2, 2026 at the Miami Beach Woman’s Club.
