Life Is a Barranquilla Carnival: Opening Reception
Apr 24, 2026
From: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Photographs, costumes and audiovisual elements introduce audiences to the traditions of Colombia’s Barranquilla Carnival during this exhibition opening at the Coral Gables Museum. The reception takes place Friday, April 24, marking the debut of a presentation that explores one of the country’s most significant cultural celebrations. Recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, the carnival reflects centuries of music, dance and community ritual.
The exhibition centers on the work of photographer León Birbragher Vinkel, who documented the festival over more than three decades. His images capture folkloric performances, masquerades and costumed participants, offering insight into the visual language and cultural meaning of the event.
In addition to photography, the exhibition includes original costumes, video and music, creating a multi-sensory environment that reflects the layered influences of African, Indigenous and European traditions within the Barranquilla Carnival.
