Opening Reception: The Vessels of Memory We Carry

Indigo-dyed textiles, a bottle tree and a sweetgrass basket trace artist Tori S. Scott’s exploration of Gullah Geechee heritage, family history and ancestral memory. The opening reception takes place Saturday, August 22, in the Garden Room of the Richmond Cottage at Deering Estate. Presented through the estate’s Contemporary Currents series, the exhibition places contemporary artwork in dialogue with the historic property and its collections.

The Vessels of Memory We Carry brings together mixed-media installations and film developed through two years of research into utilitarian art, agricultural traditions, spiritual practices and textile techniques. Indigo serves as a recurring visual element, connecting the work to histories of resilience and cultural preservation. Scott’s bottle tree, quilt and basket examine how traditions and stories are carried between individuals, families and communities.

A Miami-based visual artist, educator and curator, Scott works across disciplines to explore culture, lived experience and the ways memory is preserved or lost. Her work has been exhibited at the Frost Art Museum, the Lowe Art Museum and Deering Estate.

The exhibition remains on view from August 1 through October 20. Admission to the reception is free, with tickets available online only through Eventbrite.
