Plastic is Scary: Costumes, Cleanup & Kombucha

A beach cleanup, guided nature walk and secondhand costume exchange connect Halloween preparations with coastal conservation at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. Presented Saturday, October 10 by Debris Free Oceans, MORAES and Earth Breeze, Plastic is Scary invites participants to address plastic pollution and holiday waste through hands-on activities. The free, all-ages event is part of Florida Climate Week 2026.

Participants can collect litter along the shoreline and receive volunteer service hours for their work. During an eco walk, MORAES guides will discuss the island’s wildlife, native and invasive plants, coastal habitats and seasonal sea turtle activity. A costume swap offers another way to reduce waste by exchanging gently used Halloween costumes and accessories.

The event meets at the park’s concession stand. Advance registration through Luma is required.
