Textile Art: Banner Affirmations
Jan 16, 2026 - Jan 30, 2026
weekly on Friday
From: 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
A hands-on community workshop at Oolite Arts explores textile art as a tool for reflection, self-expression and shared connection through the creation of fabric affirmation banners.
Led by Miami-based artist Laura Marsh, the session introduces participants to fabric collage and basic hand-embroidery techniques rooted in slow craft traditions. Using reclaimed textiles, layered materials and stitched text, attendees will design and construct a personal banner incorporating words or phrases that carry individual meaning. No prior sewing experience is required, and all materials are provided, with the option to bring small fabric scraps of personal significance.
The workshop unfolds in three parts, moving from conceptual development and material selection to refinement and finishing techniques, including edging, embellishment and group critique. Emphasis is placed on process as much as outcome, encouraging mindfulness, storytelling and collective resilience through making.
Textile Art: Banner Affirmations takes place Saturday, February 21 at Oolite Arts. Participants will leave with a completed textile banner and a deeper understanding of how color, texture and text can communicate personal and shared narratives.
