Two Worlds, One Stage: Sor Juana & Frau Haydn
Sep 05, 2026
From: 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM
Two original operas explore women who challenged the limits placed on them by history, society and artistic convention. The double-bill program takes place Saturday, September 5 at Miami Beach Community Church in Miami Beach. Presented by The Opera Atelier, the evening brings together Sor Juana Inés and Daniel Daroca’s chamber opera about Frau Haydn in a program centered on creativity, resistance and self-determination.
Sor Juana Inés is an interdisciplinary work inspired by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the 17th-century Mexican nun, scholar and writer often regarded as one of Spanish America’s earliest feminist voices. The piece reflects on her intellectual life, literary legacy and defiance of colonial and religious constraints.
The second work turns to Frau Haydn through a chamber-opera lens, using wit and emotional nuance to examine creative tension, personal choice and the inner lives of women connected to history’s better-known figures. Together, the two operas reflect The Opera Atelier’s focus on contemporary opera, interdisciplinary collaboration and stories that connect the past with present-day questions of identity and voice.
