Alongside Greater Miami & Miami Beach’s exceptional restaurants are another popular kind of dining – food trucks. Spread across the destination’s many neighborhoods, these restaurants-on-wheels serve up some of the most creative eats, made by local chefs who infuse their heritage into every plate. Whether you’re craving a taste of Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Puerto Rico or somewhere else, head to South Dade and get your fix at one of the area’s rave-worthy food trucks. The seven listed below are some of the best in Miami’s southernmost neighborhoods.

Aja! Food Truck

Aja! Food Truck (pronounced “aha”) brings a fusion of Colombian and Venezuelan street food to Kendall (14804 SW 136th St.) and Homestead (30000 S. Dixie Highway). Head to this food truck any time after 6 p.m. to choose from a mouthwatering menu that includes burgers, empanadas, hot dogs, arepas stuffed with everything from grilled beef to chicken, and salchipapas (beef sausages and french fries smothered in melted cheese, ketchup and other flavorful sauces). The Hamburguesa Aja is definitely the star of the show. Order it with a chicken, beef or pork chop patty piled high with American cheese, fried cheese, ham, bacon, sweet plantains, chips, lettuce, tomato and Aja’s special sauce. Aja! can also be found in four other Miami locations: on Miller Road (10697 SW 56th St.) and Bird Road (6795 SW 40th St.), in Wynwood (197 NE 25th St.) and in Doral (7001 NW 84th Ave.).

El Kanbumbo

This family-owned food truck serves tasty Puerto Rican dishes with a twist. Inspired by the owners’ childhood in Carolina, Puerto Rico, El Kanbumbo serves octopus and king crab salad, pizza empanadas, arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas) and its signature El Tripleta (a chicken, churrasco and ham sandwich). Don’t leave without trying the mofongo – mashed plantains topped with everything from shrimp to chunks of fried pork. Find all these tasty treats at El Kanbumbo’s location on 17100 SW 184th St., just east of Krome Avenue.

Fat Boy Ricks

If you’re looking to top your burger bucket list, head over to Fat Boy Ricks in Kendall (12900 SW 128 St). Open until 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on Saturdays, this food truck serves juicy half-pound burgers on buttery brioche buns piled high with a slew of meats, cheeses and house-made sauces. Try the popular Friday Burger, which comes packed with thick-cut bacon, guava jam and pepper-jack cheese, and get an order of WTF Fries for the table. They’re truffle fries topped with a smash burger patty and a mix of sauces. Whatever you do, don’t leave without ordering a fresh-baked, gooey, chocolate chip cookie. You can thank us later.

1821 Sandwich Shop

If you go to 1821 Sandwich Shop expecting your classic peanut butter and jelly, we’re sad to say you won’t find it – but you’ll leave happy anyway. This food truck whips up delicious Peruvian street food, like lomo saltado, salchipapas, anticuchos, ceviche and, you guessed it, Peruvian-style sandwiches. Try the popular 1821 Burger, with a half-pound Angus beef patty, bacon, a fried egg and Swiss cheese, or order the chicharron sandwich with thinly sliced fried sweet potatoes, deep-fried pork and salsa criolla. If you want something more traditional, get the chaufa fried rice with chicken, steak, shrimp or a mix of all three. Find the truck in a church parking lot in Kendall at 9225 SW 137th Ave., and eat until you’re stuffed.

El Toro Loco Churrascaria

Founded at Florida International University in 2014 and run by the brother-sister duo Aldo and Mara Espinosa, El Toro Loco Churrascaria was created to bring Miami meat lovers an affordable Brazilian steakhouse experience on wheels. The meat options at this food truck franchise are nearly endless. Drool over tomahawk and ribeye steaks, chorizo, picanha, churrasco, lomo and bacon-wrapped filet mignon, all seared to perfection on a charcoal grill. Steaks here are USDA Prime Certified Angus Beef, Wagyu Beef Gold Edition or dry-aged and cured in-house meats. The brisket tamales, lechon tostones, meat tacos, meat soup, chorizo croquettes and meat and eggs keep regulars coming back. El Toro Loco Churrascaria has food trucks in Pinecrest (in the Dadeland North Shopping Center, at 6603 S. Dixie Highway), West Kendall (13595 SW 137th Ave.), Doral (7201 NW 36th St.) and on Bird Road (11381 SW 40th St.).

Q’ Sabroso

Across the street from Miami Executive Airport (in a strip mall parking lot at 13205 SW 137th Ave.), Q’ Sabroso whips up true Venezuelan street food. The menu has everything from arepas, hamburguesas and patacones (two fried plantains with chicken or pork between them) to Picaña steak and cheese, beef or chicken empanadas. If you want something you’d find only in Venezuela, order a salchiqueso. It’s a sausage hot dog piled with cabbage, “papitas” (little fries) and lots of white cheese.

Taqueria Cinco Hermanos

ou’ll know you’ve found Taqueria Cinco Hermanos when you see the white food truck with colorful fiesta flags and picnic tables. Known for its inexpensive, authentic, Hidalgo-style Mexican food, this food truck has a large menu of tacos, burritos, flautas, gorditos, moles, quesadillas, enchiladas, tostadas, soups and more. Guests can order at the “ventanita” (little takeout window) and get their dinner to go or snag a picnic table and have their tasty treats brought to them. Find Taqueria Cinco Hermanos in Florida City (941 W. Palm Dr.), Homestead (27200 SW 177 Ave.) and Cutler Bay (18398 S. Dixie Highway).
