Explore Miami Like The Midwest Husbands
- November 05, 2024
David and Edward, known as the Midwest Husbands, began their journey together with a right swipe on Tinder. Now living in Cleveland, Ohio, they’ve crafted a life that blends home design, culinary exploration and a shared love for adventure. Their recent visit to Greater Miami & Miami Beach was no exception. They immersed themselves in the vibrant food scene and stunning landscapes, all while soaking up the local culture. We spoke with the Midwest Husbands about their favorite Miami experiences.
When Did You Visit Miami And What Attracted You?
We visited Miami in April. We absolutely love architecture, so the idea of walking around in South Beach and experiencing the Art Deco architecture was something we were really excited about. The cultural elements of Miami were also something that drew us to the city. Edward’s family is Mexican American, so the Cuban culture really interested us, including the food. And, of course, the beach was a given. We love anything by the water. It’s a way for us to relax and enjoy a vacation or trip away from the Midwest. The beach was absolutely beautiful, with the Atlantic Ocean showing off its magnificent turquoise-blue hues.

Where Did You Stay?
We stayed at the Best Western Plus Atlantic Beach Resort and found it to be centrally located to nearly everything we enjoyed. The hotel was truly right in the heart of Miami Beach; the location was amazing. It was great to be able to walk to a number of places. A highlight for us was the boardwalk access. We enjoyed walking a few blocks down the beach and admiring sights, such as the famous Fontainebleau hotel. In addition to that, we loved our room’s ocean view, and since we had a corner room, we were also able to see the Intracoastal Waterway over into the city, which was really neat!
Did You Find Miami To Be Gay-Friendly?
Going into the trip, we didn't have any concerns, and when we finally experienced Miami, we absolutely found it to be very welcoming. We were able to walk and hold hands in different places and never felt like we were different or unsafe. It just goes to show that Miami is very gay-friendly. It embraces a melting pot of everyone, and that is something that is truly admirable. We felt welcomed everywhere we went.

What Cultural Activities Did You Enjoy Most?
Ocean Drive and its Art Deco buildings was a beautiful experience. It took us back to the 1920s, and it was great to see a district of something so unique in the country at that time. It was fun to spot some of the more-famous buildings. We got pictures of the Breakwater Hotel and a few others. We really enjoyed the pastel colors, and we hope to check it out at night next time to experience all the neon.

During our stay, we checked out museums such as Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science. Frost Science was the most memorable for us. The architectural style of how the science museum put the aquarium in the middle was incredible and unique. We also loved the indoor-outdoor aspect of the entire campus, which allowed us to walk from one level to another easily. The ocean life near the top was really amazing. We also enjoyed a show in the Frost Planetarium, and I think that was just one of the coolest things that we got to experience.

We were raving about our cultural experiences with friends and some of our family members who now live in Miami. We were urging them to check out these places. A few of our friends were like, “Wait, what? That’s in Miami?” That was actually a comment that we got about Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. It’s such a beautiful home. Truly something special.

What Were Some Of Your Favorite Food Spots?
One of our most memorable meals was at Tinta y Café in Miami Shores. It was incredible and worth the drive. We liked that the restaurant had a local feel to it. We didn’t feel like we were tourists at all. The café con leche was delightful. We enjoyed the breakfast sandwiches with ham, Swiss cheese and jam. Then we shared a Nutella croissant and guava pastries, which were the perfect end. The food was just delicious, and then taking some of the pastries to go was amazing.
The second pick was Crema Gourmet Espresso Bar, which we went to a couple of times. The baguette breakfast sandwiches were delicious. It has a really nice vibe inside, and the location in Miami Beach has a really neat courtyard area where you could sit and enjoy dining.

What Is The Must-Do Thing You Would Recommend To People Coming to Miami For The First Time?
A must-do is the beach, and you must experience the lifeguard towers. That's something we definitely took note of, all the different lifeguard towers. Talk about architecture! It's really neat how many different styles there are of lifeguard towers. Really fun! Another must is to experience Cuban food, which is much more than just a sandwich. Miami’s different cuisines, people and cultures are beautiful, and the diversity is great.
